A “concerned citizen” contacted Darien Police on Wednesday, Sept. 4 around 2 p.m.
The caller stated that she observed a light-colored vehicle with New York plates pull into a home that is uninhabited and on the market across from her residence, police say.
The occupants of the vehicle allegedly left a note on the door of the residence which, according to the caller, provided directions to leave a package on the step, giving the addressee and tracking number, police say.
Further investigation revealed that the package originated from Fort Worth, Texas and was sent by AT&T, according to police.
Officers say they were able to set up surveillance on the residence and subsequently observed a FedEx driver arrive and place a package on the steps of the residence, as per the note’s instructions.
A few hours later, police say a Silver Honda Accord with New York plates was observed pulling into the driveway. A black male allegedly exited the vehicle, retrieved the package and drove down Huckleberry Lane, turning north onto Brookside Road, according to police.
Officers initiated a traffic stop and allegedly identified the driver as Delmon Medina, 32, and the passenger as Johell Reyes, 28, both of the Bronx.
While speaking with Medina and Reyes, police say they observed a boxed iPhone in plain view of the window.
Medina initially stated that the iPhone did not belong to him but recanted his version of events, police say. Reyes reportedly told police that he was just taking a ride with Medina.
The iPhone was a new and unopened iPhone XS Max, valued at $1,000, police say.
It was later determined that that that identity of a Monroe resident had been used to order the phone, police say. Both suspects were arrested, transported to headquarters and charged with fourth-degree larceny, fourth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny and simple trespassing. Medina was also charged with third-degree identity theft.
Medina and Reyes were released after posting their respective $1,000 and $500 bonds and are scheduled to appear in court on Monday, Sept. 16.
